WELCOME TO THE Secondary Education Program AT UTAH TECH UNIVERSITY!

The Secondary Education Program is a licensure program designed to work in conjunction with students’ declared majors. Students will have the benefit of two academic advisors – one for their content major and one for the Secondary Education Program. The bulk of instruction will occur in a student’s declared major content area (listed below) with the final two (2) semesters of instruction through the Secondary Education Program.

Secondary Education Program Information

A. Requirements for students with B.S/B.A Degrees in Progress:

  • No more than 2 remaining content courses to be completed and signed off by the content area department advisor (see chart below).
  • Earn a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Earn a C grade or higher in all content and prerequisite courses.
  • Submit official university transcripts.
  • Pass an appropriate PRAXIS II licensing exam and submit official score report by deadline. Click here for more information.
  • Complete program application the semester before beginning the SCED Program. Applications are posted online here. The application process requires an official
  • UT transcript, two Professional Responsibility evaluations completed by Education prerequisite instructors, two recommendation forms, background check clearance, and official Praxis score report. Application deadlines are in February and September.
  • If the above requirements have been appropriately satisfied by the application deadline, students will invited to participate in a Group Interview.
  • Students who receive an overall admission score of 74 or higher will be accepted to the Secondary Education Program. This score is calculated based on scores from the group interview, evaluations, recommendation forms, and GPA.
  • Complete all GE and the following prerequisite Education courses:EDUC 1010 – Foundations/Introduction to Education
    • EDUC 2010 – Introduction to Teaching Exceptional Learners
    • EDUC 2400 – Foundations of Multicultural/ESL Learners
    • EDUC 2500 – Instructional Technology in K-12 Classrooms (within 5 years of application)
    • EDUC 2700 – Graduation Planning, Program Application & Career Prep
    • EDUC 3110 – Educational Psychology

B. Requirements for students with B.S. / B.A or Higher Degrees Completed:

  • Students must have a content major that is acceptable for licensure from the Utah State Board of Education.
  • Cumulative GPA must be a 3.0 or higher
  • The following Program prerequisite courses must be completed before students can enter into the program:EDUC 1010 – Foundations/Introduction to Education
    • EDUC 2010 – Introduction to Teaching Exceptional Learners
    • EDUC 2400 – Foundations of Multicultural/ESL Learners
    • EDUC 2500 – Technology for Educators & Electronic Portfolios
    • EDUC 3110 – Educational Psychology

Academic content departments may add additional admission requirements. These requirements, if added, will focus on unique aspects of each discipline.
